RES-ECON 262 – Environmental Econ

Minor Req.

International Exchange

Fall ‘09 – July 15 through November 12.
University of Queensland, St. Lucia Campus,
Brisbane, Austrialia

I chose this campus because of my niche of trying everything. This is the most expensive and the best exchange school found in the IPO (international programs office) catalog. This school is member of the G8, not the 8 countries, but the best 8 universities of Au. Kinda like the Ivy League equivalent. I have always heard of oohhs and ahhs about how difficult the classes are to be. So I want to take this opportunity to spearhead this ‘rumor’. Classes I am planning to take there are ‘Price Theory’ and ‘Environmental Economics’ and ‘history and society of the Environment’. you might ask, you are only taking 3 classes, but each class is 4 credits and the rest of my academic requirements are left in my major and comcol, and Have to take time to explore Au. The first two are minor req.s and the last one is an SI.

One class I wanted to take but I could not because of schedule conflict, was Perspective. Even though it was few hundred dollars with scholarship and it was late in Noho. It would have been a once in a lifetime experience. To replicate this, I was looking to maybe have one more class in .au so I can get a similar experience. I am really dissapointed that I could not take this class. Ric said “It will change your life” on the men’s hike during veterans day, “Amen” was my reply.

Finish my studies in Operations Management, Resource Economics:Natural Resources and Information Technology. Work in some company which prime purpose is to green operations of businesses. Get my MS/MBA in sustainable systems from UMich. Work for couple of firms. Goto Norway and Germany for some more experience. Work as a freelance consultant. Write a book, all proceeds to various green organizations. Retire as a peasant in southern China, working in the rice paddies for few years. Then travel the world with my sig otr.

What am I looking looking forward to in future, I dont know,  I would never know, but one thing I know is that God’s intentions are always good, and what ever comes will be welcomed by me.

Clean Energy Connections: I gained more from my conversations with my Josh Stoffel, program director of Eco-Rep than the entire event. He revealed to me about the positions of the environmental committee of the SGA, and told me to apply. This was a great way to evaluate and implement policies affecting the campus’s sustainability. It is very imperative to work from the top as well as from the bottom. Being an Eco-Rep has shown me how much people care and how much they dont. One of the useful advice I got from a person was how to find a job. His solution was to find a job you like and have sustainability kick in as a side. But he did not get what I really wanted to do. 60% of the energy made in America is wasted. Businesses account for almost 2/3rds of this. I want to dive in there where the core problem is energy usage. I want to cut the usage and make biz more energy efficient.

I am thinking about a winter internship for next year (senior) in Environmental Compliance Services, Inc. (ECS).
